How many hours of PRTL do I need?
Short answerYou need a minimum of 90 hours of PRTL in each registration period — three years for social workers and social care managers, five years for social care workers, practitioners and senior care workers. Part-time workers have the same 90-hour requirement. Keep a written personal development plan, reviewed annually with your manager.
What counts as PRTL?
Short answerA broad mix: employer induction, in-house and mandatory training, supervision, qualifications, shadowing, mentoring, case discussions, journal clubs, conferences, distance learning, Learning Zone and SCIE digital learning, and learning from work experience. Each activity should show how it benefits the people you support.
What happens if I'm audited?
Short answerNISCC selects a random sample. Social workers get five months' notice and submit a role summary, PDP, activity summary and a 1,500-word reflective statement by 1 June or 1 December. Social care workers get 90 days to submit the form, signed by their manager. Partial submissions get one resubmission (20 days).

When is the deadline?
Short answerThere is no shared calendar date. Your 90 hours must be complete by the end of your own registration period, when you renew and sign the PRTL declaration. If you cannot complete PRTL through exceptional circumstances or family leave, email the registration team at least 20 days before renewal to request deferral.
