Social Care Wales CPD requirements for social care workers, in plain English
Short answers first, detail after, source at the bottom. Written to be read on a phone at work.
The rule in one sentence
From 1 April 2025 there is no hours target or training log to submit; you must keep a CPD record, discuss it regularly with your manager, make sure it improves your care and meets the Code of Professional Practice, and confirm this at renewal — Social Care Wales may sample records.

How many hours of CPD do I need?
Short answerThere is no number. Since 1 April 2025 the former 45-hour and 90-hour three-year targets are gone, and you no longer log CPD in SCWonline or submit a training record at renewal. What matters is the quality and impact of your learning. You must still keep your own CPD record and review it with your manager.
What counts as CPD?
Short answerQualifications or accredited courses; training, workshops, seminars, conferences; e-learning; professional forums; shadowing colleagues; research or structured reading; presenting; secondments; volunteering in a new service; taking on new responsibilities. CPD should include mandatory training, be relevant to your job and keep you current with legislation, policy and practice.
What happens if I'm audited?
Short answerSocial Care Wales may contact you to check your CPD record as part of a sample. You will be given time to send what is needed. Your SCWonline account can hold your record but is not mandatory; self-employed registrants must keep their own. Renewal can be refused if requirements are not met.
When is the deadline?
Short answerYour deadline is your own three-year renewal date. The application opens 86 days beforehand and must be completed at least 21 days before the date, or a notice of intention to remove goes to you and your employer. Registration lapses one day after the renewal date; social care workers also need an approved signatory's endorsement.
