ARB CPD requirements for architects, in plain English

Short answers first, detail after, source at the bottom. Written to be read on a phone at work.

The rule in one sentence

Since 1 January 2025 every UK-registered architect must undertake, record (on MyARB or RIBA) and reflect on CPD each calendar year, including the two mandatory topics (fire and life safety; environmental sustainability), and declare compliance when renewing registration by 31 December.

How much CPD do I need?

Short answerThere is no minimum number of hours or points: the scheme is outcomes-focused. ARB recommends aiming for at least eight CPD activities a year, including at least one activity per mandatory topic, but architects decide for themselves how much CPD their role requires. In 2025 the median recorded on MyARB was four activities.

What counts as CPD?

Short answerAnything that improves your ability to practise: formal courses and webinars, or informal learning such as reading, peer discussion, research, teaching or lessons from a project. Each activity needs a date, topic, activity type and a learning reflection. Certificates are not evidence and will not be reviewed. Both mandatory topics must be covered each year.

What happens if I'm audited?

Short answerAfter renewal ARB reviews records for quality and compliance. MyARB records are reviewed without you doing anything; if you record with RIBA you may be selected and must upload a copy to MyARB by a given date. If a record falls short, ARB tells you and gives time to fix it; those who do not act can be removed from the Register.

When is the deadline?

Short answerThe recording deadline is 31 December each year and you cannot add CPD for a previous year once renewal closes. When renewing you declare that you complied and recorded on MyARB or RIBA, joined that year, or request a deferment. An incorrect declaration can lead to disciplinary action or removal.
